Giant Sand Castles

August 23, 2013

When I think of sand, I think of beach holidays and being a kid building sand castles. Last night, I went to the ‘Tales in the Sand‘ exhibition in Tel Aviv. Sculptures have carved and modelled fairy-tales, historical fables and comic book characters from the sand with amazing detail. The sculptures are HUGE – no shortage of materials when you basically live in the desert!

The exhibition was a collaboration of the Dutch World Sand Sculpting Academy and their Israeli colleagues, and is a follow-up to a show two years ago. I watched a film recorded during the process, showing the painstaking patience and time that these artists spent in the blazing heat carving their masterpieces. Amazing, and inspirational. To me, the process is as much a part of the art as the final piece.

The place was full of kids, but they’ll never really understand the work that has gone into these creations. They just liked to play in the sand box!

My favourites are photographed here, although the photos certainly don’t portray size or do the detail justice

And my personal favourite:

Tyrion Lannister; Game of Thrones

Now, as an adult, despite living near the beach and have the option to go whenever I want, I avoid it because sand is ‘messy’ (those of you that know me, will know that I don’t like mess!). This however, might make me go back, if only to try to build a life-size space ship…
